Watch Live Stream⚠️ Wildlife alert — Daisy Walk
The Daisy Walk runs through wild, open strandveld. This morning a rooikat (caracal) and her kittens were sighted along the walk. This is a protected wildlife area — please give them space.
The rooikat (Caracal caracal) is a medium-sized wild cat and one of the West Coast's most elusive predators. It is shy and secretive, mostly active at dawn, dusk and at night, and is very seldom seen — so a mother with kittens is a special sighting and a sign of a healthy strandveld ecosystem. Rooikatte are not a danger to people who leave them alone, but they will hunt small pets.
| Appearance | Sleek reddish-tan to sandy coat, pale belly, and long black tufts on the tips of its ears. Roughly twice the size of a house cat. |
| Weight | About 8–19 kg; males are larger than females. |
| Active | Mainly at dusk, at night and early morning. Solitary, except for mothers with kittens. |
| Diet | Rodents, hares, dassies, birds and small antelope — and unattended cats and small dogs. |
| Kittens | Usually 2–3 per litter. They stay with their mother for about 9–10 months while she teaches them to hunt. |
| Status | Protected wild animal. Never harm, trap, chase or feed one. |
